Pregnancy brings a lot of changes to the body. As your baby grows, your posture, balance, weight distribution and the way you move all change. While these changes are a normal part of pregnancy, they can also lead to aches and pains that make everyday things like sleeping, walking, exercising, working or getting out of a chair more difficult.

Pregnancy-specific chiropractic care can be a gentle way to help manage some of these common aches and discomforts. At Brix Wellness, care is tailored to each person, taking into account their symptoms, stage of pregnancy, activity level and overall health.

The goal isn't simply to treat the spot that hurts. We look at how your body is moving as a whole and work to maintain comfortable joint movement, muscle function and mobility as your body changes.

Pregnancy-Specific Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatment can be modified throughout pregnancy as your body changes. There isn't one technique or treatment plan that works for everyone.

One approach commonly used in pregnancy care is the Webster Technique. It involves specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments to the pelvis along with soft-tissue work to the muscles and tissues around it. The goal is to support normal pelvic and musculoskeletal function while improving comfort and mobility.

Depending on your needs, treatment may also include soft-tissue therapy, mobility work, strengthening exercises or advice about movement and posture.

Common Pregnancy-Related Complaints

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy. As your belly grows and your posture and weight distribution change, the muscles and joints of your lower back and pelvis have to work differently.

Gentle chiropractic treatment can address some of the mechanical factors contributing to back discomfort and help maintain movement in the lower back, pelvis and surrounding muscles. Exercises may also be recommended to maintain strength and mobility through pregnancy.

Sciatica and Leg Pain

Some people experience aching, tingling or pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg during pregnancy. Changes in posture, pelvic mechanics, muscle tension and mobility can all contribute.

A pregnancy-specific chiropractic assessment can help identify musculoskeletal factors that may be playing a role. Treatment may focus on the lower back, pelvis, hips and surrounding soft tissues, along with stretches or exercises when appropriate.

Because leg symptoms can have different causes during pregnancy, significant or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a medical professional.

Hip and Pelvic Discomfort

As pregnancy progresses, changes around the pelvis and hips can make walking, climbing stairs, standing for long periods or turning over in bed uncomfortable.

Chiropractic care can help maintain comfortable movement in the hips, pelvis and lower back while addressing areas of muscle tension or restricted movement. Strengthening and mobility exercises can also help support the hips and pelvis as your pregnancy progresses.

Headaches

Headaches during pregnancy can have many causes, including hormonal changes, stress, poor sleep, dehydration, muscle tension and changes in posture.

When a headache has a musculoskeletal component, gentle treatment to the neck, upper back and shoulders may help address contributing tension and restricted movement. We may also look at posture, sleeping positions, workstation setup and everyday movement habits.

A new, severe or unusual headache—particularly one accompanied by vision changes, swelling, high blood pressure, dizziness or abdominal pain—should be assessed promptly by a medical professional.

Staying Active During Pregnancy

Hands-on treatment is only one part of pregnancy-specific chiropractic care. When appropriate, exercise and movement can help maintain strength, mobility and physical function throughout pregnancy.

Exercises should be based on your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, fitness level and the activities you already enjoy. This might include strengthening, mobility, stretching, stability work or modifications to your existing exercise routine.

If you have pregnancy-related complications or have been given activity restrictions by your healthcare provider, those recommendations should always take priority.

Care That Changes With You

Every pregnancy is different, and what feels comfortable in the first trimester may not be appropriate later on. That's why we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

An assessment allows us to understand what's bothering you, how you're moving and where you may have areas of restriction or muscle tension. Your treatment can then be adjusted as your pregnancy progresses.

Whether you're dealing with low back pain, sciatica, headaches, hip discomfort or general aches and pains, a pregnancy-specific chiropractic assessment can help determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

At Brix Wellness, our goal is to help you stay as comfortable, mobile and active as possible while respecting the unique needs of your changing body.
